With over 27 years' of experience in the industry I can offer cost effective design services for a wide range of electronic applications.
My background in a variety of engineering and electronics fields gives me an excellent working knowledge that allows me to appreciate the various design considerations that are involved in taking a design from a client's ideas through to a finished product.
Services offered
As a freelance electronics engineer, I can provide general design duties including the following:
- PCB layout - over 12 years' experience with Protel and Altium designer as well as multi-layer, flexible and flexi-rigid PCB design
- Schematic capture - I can take a thumbnail sketch and turn it into a professional schematic suitable for presentation or further development into a PCB
- Design library creation - relieve yourself of the time consuming process of creating schematic and footprint libraries
- Simulation - SPICE simulation of critical circuit elements
- Reverse engineering - recreate lost or lacking design documentation for existing products
- Design reviews - review new or existing designs for potential issues
- Updating - replace obsolete components, take advantage of new technologies and comply with RoHS, REACH and WEEE directives
- Documentation - generation of technical documentation for a new or existing design, including design and test specifications
- Embedded software - development of embedded code for 8 to 32-bit microprocessors
- Low level analogue - design of critical, low noise, high precision, front-end circuitry
- High power - design of inverters and motor drives
- High speed digital - FPGA and EPLD programming

How I work
I can work from my home office, on your site or a combination of both. My preference is for the later as I find I am more productive in my own environment. It also allows me to work at the times that suit me, which are often very early in the morning or very late at night. It also gives me the possibility of working very long days in order to get work completed for a deadline.
Remote working has proven itself to be very successful. I have completed several projects for clients in the UK.
My preference is to be paid hourly, especially for R&D type work where it is very difficult to establish a suitable timeframe up front.
Some tasks, such as PCB layout or design reviews are naturally self contained and lend themselves to being farmed out as a package. If required, I can quote a fixed price for these activities.
I can work with anything from thumbnail sketches and pieces of hardware, through to fully documented schematics and CAD data. I will generally allow myself plenty of time to to check over any schematic since a good schematic and component libraries are the bedrock of a good PCB design.
